Less than one hour from Paris, the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte invites you to experience the elegance, refinement and artistic brilliance of the Grand Siècle — the great century of Louis XIV.

A masterpiece of 17th-century French architecture and a listed historic monument, Vaux-le-Vicomte remains the largest privately owned château in France. Surrounded by more than 500 hectares of magnificent gardens and landscapes, it has been carefully preserved by the same family since 1875.

A place of splendor, artistic innovation and political ambition, the château also witnessed one of the most famous political scandals of Louis XIV’s reign.

The genius of the Grand Siècle: Le Vau, Le Brun and Le Nôtre

Vaux-le-Vicomte was born from the collaboration of three of the greatest artists of the 17th century:
- architect Louis Le Vau,
- painter and decorator Charles Le Brun,
- landscape designer André Le Nôtre.

Together, they created a perfectly harmonious estate that would later inspire the Palace of Versailles and many royal residences throughout Europe.
Architecture, painting, gardens and visual perspectives combine here to embody the ideals of French classical beauty.

Nicolas Fouquet and the rise of royal absolutism

The château remains deeply associated with its creator, Nicolas Fouquet, Superintendent of Finances under Louis XIV and an extraordinary patron of the arts and sciences.

On August 17, 1661, Fouquet hosted a magnificent celebration at Vaux-le-Vicomte for the young king, bringing together Molière, La Fontaine and the greatest artists of the time. Only weeks later, Fouquet was arrested on the king’s orders.

His dramatic downfall marked a turning point in French political history and symbolized the rise of Louis XIV’s absolute power.

Court intrigues, artistic patronage, political rivalries and the mysteries of the Ancien Régime all come alive throughout the visit.
