Just outside Paris, the Château d’Ormesson invites visitors to discover one of the most
elegant and confidential private estates in the Île-de-France region.
Located between Ormesson-sur-Marne, Noiseau and Sucy-en-Brie, this remarkable
16th-century château stands out for its unique architectural character and the exceptional
harmony of its estate. Surrounded by a large reflecting pool, the château presents two
contrasting façades: one Renaissance and the other in the Louis XV style, creating a rare
architectural dialogue between different periods and artistic influences.
The estate extends across nearly 140 hectares of rolling landscapes, woodlands and
landscaped gardens inspired by the grand perspectives associated with André Le Nôtre. The
Morbras River gently crosses the grounds, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere of the estate.
A place of literary and historical memory
The Château d’Ormesson is deeply connected to French political, literary and diplomatic
history. Since 1630, it has remained in the possession of the same aristocratic family: the
d’Ormessons.
Today, the estate preserves one of the largest private archival collections in France,
including important documents related to the famous Fouquet Affair.
Among the notable members of the family was Olivier III d’Ormesson, the magistrate
involved in the trial of Nicolas Fouquet under Louis XIV.
The château’s last major resident was Count Wladimir d’Ormesson — diplomat, writer and
member of the Académie française. Ambassador to the Vatican and Argentina, columnist for
Le Figaro and La Revue des Deux Mondes, close to both Marshal Lyautey and General de
Gaulle, he embodied the great French intellectual and diplomatic tradition of the 20th
century.
Since his death in 1973, the château has opened only exceptionally to the public, mainly
during special cultural events and the European Heritage Days.
