Located in the heart of the Brie region, the Château de Blandy-les-Tours is one of the finest
examples of medieval military architecture in the Île-de-France region.
Surrounded by a picturesque village, this remarkable fortified castle impresses visitors with
its massive curtain walls, ramparts, machicolations, towers, moat and imposing keep.
Carefully restored using a 17th-century gouache painting as a historical reference, the
château now offers a rare immersion into the world of medieval fortresses.
A fortress shaped by the Hundred Years’ War
Originally a simple fortified manor built in the 13th century, Blandy-les-Tours gradually
evolved into a powerful defensive stronghold during the 14th century, in the troubled context
of the Hundred Years’ War.
The château became a remarkable example of medieval military architecture. Its impressive
keep, rising nearly 39 meters high, was protected by drawbridges, machicolations and one of
the oldest surviving wooden portcullises in France.
A dendrochronological study conducted in 2006 dated this exceptional wooden gate
between 1390 and 1405, highlighting the remarkable authenticity of the site.
Over the centuries, the château evolved from a military fortress into an aristocratic
residence, later becoming an agricultural estate before falling into ruin. Listed as a historic
monument, it was fully restored and reopened to the public in 2007.
Between aristocratic life and the French Wars of Religion
This guided tour explores the daily life of the Viscounts of Melun, the powerful medieval lords
who developed the château during the Middle Ages.
The visit also highlights the refined and political history of the great aristocratic families
connected to Blandy, including the houses of Orléans-Longueville, Bourbon-Condé, Savoy
and Nemours.
Visitors are introduced to Jacqueline de Rohan, Duchess of Longueville, who hosted at
Blandy the wedding of Henri I de Condé and Marie de Clèves on August 10, 1572. At that
time, the château became both a prestigious residence and an important center of French
Protestantism on the eve of the Wars of Religion.
